Pattern Making & Block Construction Intensive - (Industry Standard)

Description

You have gained some confidence behind the sewing machine and you are now ready to take your dressmaking skills to the next level? Maybe you sew professionally and want to upskill? Perfect! We have just the class for you. This class is for those who want to learn how to make custom fitted clothes and their own dress patterns, using professional methods as taught at fashion design colleges.

Come and join us in this weeknight class on pattern making, using your own measurements. Over 10 classes, beginners will draft a skirt and bodice block from their own measurements and adjust it to make different pattern designs, and learn more about pattern fitting, too. (Continuing students will draft a sleeve and dress block and make a variety of different style sleeves and necklines. Intermediate students will learn how to draft a large variety of collars, and construct and fit a pant block. Advanced students will tackle coat and jacket patterns, and if time permits swimwear blocks and/or lingerie/bra/simple corset)

You will make up a toile (sample garment) for all of your blocks to check and adjust for fit. Once the fit has been corrected, you will use your personal block to make up patterns for different skirt and dress designs (or other patterns relevant to skill level) that will fit perfectly to your own curves. Your teacher will help you fit the patterns you designed at toile stage if desired.

Pattern variations we will be making for the skirt are a basic pencil skirt with facing, a high-waisted wiggle skirt with kick pleat, an a-line skirt (flared skirt), a low-waisted panel skirt, how to add waistbands and waist facings, as well as pockets. You will create a variety of bodice styles. You will learn about dart movement and flare, etc, to create design lines and pattern variations. Continuing students will design a range dress patterns in full or third scale, using the bodice and skirt block, and the one piece dress block they drafted and move on to sleeves, pants, jackets, etc.

This is your chance to play designer and add your own spin on things.

Why you should take this class:

Making your own patterns from your own body measurements ensures a perfect fitting garment and allows you to make clothes just the way you like them, without spending time and money buying and adjusting commercial patterns.

Pre-requisites:

You need to have some basic sewing experience, and ideally (but not necessarily , you have worked with a commercial sewing pattern before).

What you will need to bring:

Many of the items required are most likely already in your possession:

  • A sharp pencil
  • An eraser
  • Sticky tape
  • A glue stick
  • A pencil sharpener
  • Paper scissors

The following high quality items can be purchased from us in class at a reasonable price if you don't already have them:

  • A set square large pattern making ruler in centimetres

  • A French Curve and Various Curved Patternmaking Rulers

  • All Pattern Cardboard, Tracing Paper and Spot and Cross Drafting Paper
  • A stiletto, tracing wheel and pattern notcher
  • Pattern Hooks

How are our classes different to the community college pattern making classes?

The maximum class number at the community college is usually 20 students, allowing for very little time of student/teacher interaction, personal fittings and for asking general questions. Our pattern making class is limited to only 4 to 7 students.

The biggest difference with our pattern making class, however, is that you will learn to draft your pattern from scratch from your own measurements. In other classes you work with ready made blocks (base patterns) that you adjust to your own size for your personal block, rather than drafting your own. If you change size or want to make a pattern for someone else, you will not be able to do so without a basic block to work from. At MAKEandLEARN you will learn the formulas and steps to create and fit blocks to any size, a real skill that you will be able to take away and use for the rest of your sewing life.

Cancelation & Refund Policy

Cancellation policy

To ensure that every student receives plenty of attention and opportunities to ask questions during the class, we make it a priority to keep our class sizes small. Classes also require a minimum number of students to run.

For that reason, your enrollment in the class is final and cancellations will forfeit the full fee However, you can also transfer your place at that class to a friend or family member at no extra cost, just let us know.

So please double check your availability before making a booking as there will be no exceptions. If you do know in advance that you may be unavailable for a specific day of the class, please contact us prior to discuss. We may be able to accommodate you in an alternate class to make up for the missed class (this option is only available if confirmed at the time of booking.)

Missed Classes

We run small group classes, most of them sized between four to six students only. This means that our classes are usually fully booked. With prior arrangement (upon booking a class), we may be able to offer a make-up class at the teacher's discretion, given there is a space available in a parallel class.

However, we regret we do not offer make-up classes for missed classes in general, due to the small class size mentioned. If we did, we would have to change our business model to larger size groups, or significantly increase our prices to accommodate the extra students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us to discuss.

Natascha is a wonderful teacher who explains pattern making in a very clear and detailed manner. She is always available over email to help with the tasks and facilitates learning in a very hands on way. I will be booking in for another class starting in a few weeks to continue learning!
