Pearls come in all shapes and sizes and are available these days at reasonable prices. Learn how to knot your own necklaces with a clasp.
Traditionally, pearls are knotted for two reasons. One is for safety so that if you accidentally break the string of pearls, they don't scatter everywhere and the second is to preserve the pearl itself so that they do not rub together and damage each other. Pearls are made of a very soft porous natural material secreted by the oyster, called nacre, as a reaction to an irritant, a grain of sand or an implanted shell bead. These, and other properties of pearls, will be explained in the class.
Traditional knotting is still the best way to string pearls - or any precious vintage beads - for necklaces, bracelets etc. Once you know this technique, you can restore, redesign and upcycle heirlooms and vintage finds, or buy the exact type of new pearls to create your perfect pearl string.
