Art From The World: Micro-Macramé Jewellery

Next Available: 30 Sep 10:30AM
2.5 hours

Description

Come along to learn about all things micro-macramé!

Micro-macramé jewellery takes its techniques from traditional macramé practices, which use rope and a variety of different knots to create decorative, woven objects such as wall hangings and plant holders. Micro-macrame uses these same knotting techniques with waxed thread or jewellery cord to create intricate, textile jewellery pieces.

You will learn the basic knots that underpin macramé and micro-macramé and will use these knots to create your own owl necklace. Artist and maker from Iran, Azi, will guide you through this process whilst sharing some Persian tea (to help the creative process), a little about her Persian culture & how she first came to learn this art form back in Iran.

*This class is part of a new workshop series 'Art From The World,' an initiative led by Work-Shop and Welcome Studio.

Azadeh Zolfigol is a Welcome Studio artist, an art-based social enterprise partnering with people seeking asylum to create positive social change and an environment of 'welcome'. Welcome Studio artists are artists from refugee backgrounds or who are currently seeking asylum in Australia. They bring art and craft skills from their own cultures and experiences that enrich our Australian culture and society, as they form another part of our beautiful community. About Azadeh Zolfigol:

Azadeh Zolfigol was born in Tehran, Iran, and came to Australia in 2013. She has a degree in Political Science and Theology, and has since exhibited widely in Australia with a range of different types of art-making. Her first macrame work was inspired by watching her mother's hand about 25 years ago. This developed in Azadeh a passion for using macrame skills to make unique artwork and jewellery for others, as she says she feels so happy to see the amazement in other peoples eyes when they see the craft. Azadeh has always felt that jewellery is important; it helps us to express our personality, our self-confidence and our personal style. Preferring natural materials, she commonly uses natural gemstones and wood in her work which led her to discover a macrame technique which continues to open up so many creative ideas and opportunities.
