Description

There’s never been a better time to start a girl gang (or join one)! Whether you’re into skateboarding, slam poetry or street art, chances are you’ll find a group of like-minded females who want to share their experiences, educate others, or simply hang out in a supportive and inclusive environment.

GGATF (Girl Gangs are the Future) is a project that profiles influential females pushing boundaries in the creative industries. With a focus on sharing stories and inspiring others, GGATF aims to connect like-minded women and spark conversations.

In celebration of girl gangs everywhere, GGATF presents ‘How To Start A Girl Gang’, bringing together the minds behind some of Melbourne’s most influential female groups to share their advice on how to start a girl gang.

Featuring a panel discussion led by Kat Cazanis (Nitty Gritty), with guest speakers Stass Jones & Alana Smith (Thrusher), Brooke Walker (Fixed Gurls Melbrn), Gemma Mahoney (Accidental Discharge) and Imogen Geikowski (Girl Pearl Collective / Plump Butts zine), you’ll hear first hand how and why they formed a community around their passion, any challenges or obstacles they encountered along the way, and what the future looks like for their girl gangs.

Stick around for a drink afterwards and meet like-minded people, who knows - you might even be inspired to start your own girl gang!

BROOK WALKER (FIXED GURLS MELBRN)

Brooke Is the creator and facilitator of Fixed Gurls Melbourne, a non-male focused casual cycling community.  Brooke started riding as a child growing up in Wollongong and as a teenager got hooked on fixed gear riding. After taking a 5 year hiatus from riding to become a Mum. Brooke quickly started riding again after seeing the community in Melbourne.

After cutting her teeth in the punk and hardcore scenes in Sydney and Canberra, Brooke has been an advocate for non males in heavily male dominated communities for well over a decade. Focusing on empowerment, skill sharing, building friendships and having fun, Brooke stated Fixed Gurls 2016, to get more Butts on bikes and help grow her personal GURL GANG. When Brooke isn't leading a monthly cycle or organizing rides and races for the GURL Gang, you can find her riding around the city working her day job as a Bike Messenger, Playing bass and singing in bands, selling active wear to mums at highpoint, being a rad mumma & supporting any group that gets non males excelling in typically male places.
