Description

Come along to this introduction to using drawing and art as a tool for social change with political cartoonist, animator and activist, Mahmoud Salameh. Mahmoud’s work commonly focuses on themes such as human rights issues, the refugee experience, and the war in his home country, Syria and Palestine.

Used by journalists and activists around the world, we'll be looking at how to take a big idea or complex issue and turn it into hard-hitting art that will get your message across. Mahmoud will lead an exploration into the basics of political cartooning techniques and how to convey a message or big idea through an art. He will also share his experiences as a political cartoonist both in Syria and during his life now in Australia.

So come along and bring a concept/story that you are passionate about - whether it is something political, a human rights issue, or that your community veggie patch is continually raided by an unknown suspect, and learn to convey this issue  into art.

*This class is part of a new workshop series ‘Art From The World,’ an initiative led by Work-Shop and Welcome Studio.

Mahmoud Salameh is a Welcome Studio artist, an art-based social enterprise partnering with people seeking asylum to create positive social change and spread a message of ‘welcome’. Welcome Studio artists are from refugee backgrounds or are currently seeking asylum in Australia. They bring and share art and craft skills from their own cultures and experiences that enrich our Australian culture and society. Profits from these workshops will fund community projects and art workshops with Sydney’s refugee community. Find more on Welcome Studio at www.welcomestudio.com.au
