(Please note:  The course beginning Saturday March 14 will run over 4 weeks - 3 x 4 hour sessions, 1 x 3 hour session)

You will learn the basics of ceramics in a friendly and encouraging environment, starting with a broad slab of clay and progressing all the way through to a finished piece of work. We will focus on making functional ware such as cups, bowls and vases.

The course covers: basic ceramic theory; ceramics OH & S and good studio practice; wedging; centring; the forming of vessels on the wheel; finishing techniques such as trimming and decorating and glazing.

The course will be limited to 6 participants, allowing for lots of individual tuition.

Pieces can be collected 3 -4 week after the course finishes.

No prior experience needed.  Perfect for beginners.

After completing the course, participants will have the option to continue making work in our self-guided open studio sessions and will have the option to get their work fired in our kilns.

Course tutors:

Courses on Mondays and Wednesday will be facilitated by Kib Denson.

Kib Denson has been practicing ceramics for the past 7 years, having transitioned from a traditional fine art practice, and now works full-time in the industry.

Kib teaches a range of ways to work with clay, from hand-building, wheel throwing to slip casting. In her personal work the focus is on minimal, wheel thrown functional forms and glaze experimentation. She is constantly working to expand her skills with experimentation in wood firing, sourcing and processing wild clays, and sculptural techniques.  For images click here

The wheel throwing classes were wonderful! I feel like I’ve left the 6 weeks with a clear understanding of all the fine details and needs when making pottery. Emily was a great teacher; explaining in great detail, open to questions, positive, helpful, always willing to repeat herself and totally supportive when anyone was having difficulty or found a stage frustrating. The space is lovely and the class size of 6 was really pleasant. Can not recommend enough of youare willing to learn, make some mistakes and want to get to know the foundations of wheel throwing.

I highly recommend the 6 week intro to the wheel! Kibby was very patient and keen for us all to get the most out of each session. With only 6 people in the class, there was plenty of time for questions and one-on-one guidance. I achieved more than I expected and will definitely be returning for the open sessions!
