The Growing Mushrooms course with Brendan was fantastic. Brendan's teaching style really catered to everyone's learning ability, with a combination of power-point and stand-alone presentations for content, group conversations and hands-on activities. Brendan is extremely knowledgeable about all things mushroom related and the learning environment was relaxed and exciting. HIGHLIGHTS Learning about the vital role that fungi play in nature, including the connectivity and symbiotic relationships they form in the ecosystem. For example; their importance in the recycling of life by providing essential substances for other plants and preforming the role of mediators in nature, by assisting with the nutrient cycle for trees and vegetation. For thousands of years mushrooms have been used by humans worldwide for their nutritional and medicinal values and explored for their psychoactive properties. Fungi have been shown to remove pollutants and toxic substances from contaminated sites and their potential for bioremediation is evident. It was fascinating to learn about the history and many uses for fungi and their important role in the world. The hands on activities during the workshop were fun, interesting and really gave me an excellent overview of the mushroom growing process; the types of growing mediums for fungi, selecting the right fungi for the right substrate, pasteurisation and sterilisation techniques and we got to make and take home our very own mushroom growing creations! After doing this short course, I feel very confident that I can grow and maintain a mushroom producing system at home by using a variety of techniques that I learned during the course. Thanks Brendan, I can't wait to be eating all different types of mushrooms all year round - YUM!. DOWN-SIDE The one day course offered a really good grasp on the world of fungi but it was over too quickly! A two day course would be perfect and would allow the participants to delve more deeply into the hands-on side of growing mushrooms by exploring a wider range of growing styles and processes. FINAL THOUGHTS This workshop was very reasonably priced and I feel as though I got my money's worth! I would recommend this workshop for any one who wants to learn to grow mushrooms at home all year round. You do not need any prior knowledge beforehand to get the most out of this workshop. So, if you love and eat mushrooms as much as I do, then do not hesitate and book yourself into a workshop now. You will not regret it!
