The Abbortsford Convent is an extraordinary place and is becoming an important arts, educational and cultural precinct in Melbourne. It is an invaluable resource for the arts community for training and education, an incubator for creativity and the sharing of ideas, and a place for community participation and enjoyment.
The 11 magnificent buildings and gardens are spread over 6.8 hectares in a sweeping bend in the Yarra river and are surrounded by the Collingwood Children's Farm and Yarra Bend Park.
Nestled within the walls of the Convent Annexe or Kitchen Wing are two magnificent wood fired masonry ovens built in 1901, which were once used by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd to bake all food once served at the Convent.
It is in these amazing ovens that the Convent Bakery, through the hands of its Artisan Bakers, produces a unique variety of old-fashioned wood fired bread.

This course was great! Tim was a fantastic teacher, was great at explaining and demonstrating things and knew the answers to all our questions. Made my first home loaf today following his method, came out perfectly.

The overall experience from booking to take home was exceptional. My initial class was cancelled in April 2020 due to COVID restrictions and my subsequent booking was also postponed due to further stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne. Communication from Convent bakery was excellent throughout this time, they alerted me as soon as new class dates were available and were very responsive to any email queries I had regarding dates. The day itself was fantastic. A full day of hands on cooking from 8am-2.30pm that included morning tea and lunch (which you also bake). The class size was small and our teacher Chris was extremely informative and helpful throughout the day, very engaging and willing to answer questions. At the end of the day I left with a braided white loaf, a sourdough loaf, scones and calzone (or the remainder from lunch) as well 1kg of bakers flour, convent bakery apron and recipe booklet. It was excellent value for money given the amount of hands on cooking and take home produce. I would highly recommend this class anyone!

Chris was awesome - patient and fun. Created simple ways for us to replicate what we learned at home. My took my 19 year old daughter and she loved it too.
