ONLINE ~ Dancehall Open
This will be a 50 minute class for any lovers of this style from the basics level students to the regular dancers.
Purely for the online experience this class provides students with new and exciting way to dance , move and shake the body that all ages can enjoy.
We encourage all levels and ages of dancers to attend :) get your friends together and be prepared to have lots of fun !
Dancehall music is a type of Jamaican reggae, which developed around 1979. The style characterized by a DJ singing and rapping over raw and danceable reggae It became very popular among the youths of Jamaica and then eventually made its way into the world’s music scene. The popularity of dancehall music has inspired its own dance moves and style that help to make parties and stage performances more energetic. Many dance moves seen in hip-hop videos are actually variations of dancehall dances. Dancehall moves are very energetic and consist of a lot of isolations, movement of the hips and total body movement.
Maya Sheridan is a driving force behind the Dancehall scene in Sydney. One of the earliest champions of the dance style, Maya has helped to foster the growth and popularity of Dancehall dance and movement in Sydney and Australia since the mid 1990’s. Maya toured with Dance Master Kofi Walker from Jamaica to feature as principal dancer of his company "The Afro Caribbean Dance Theatre", touring Australia performing and holding Master Classes in Dance Schools and Universities. Maya went on to study under and work with other well known influences of global and black dance throughout her career such as Paul Saliba, Shirley Sweeney, Naisda, QLD Folkloric Dance Association and Bangarra Dance Theatre.
She has pushed the boundaries of the genre in the city by forming one of the most sought after Dancehall dance squads in the city, the 101 Doll Squadron, and inviting Internationally acclaimed dancehall movement specialists from Paris, Camron One Shot and Jamaica, Latonya Styles to Sydney to build on the skills of the cities dancehall practitioners. In her capacity as a Dancer and Choreographer Maya is formally trained in Contemporary, Ballet, Tap and Jazz and specializes in Dancehall and Afro-derived dance styles. In 2015 she hosted the "NSW Dancehall Queen & King Competition" and 2017 founded the "Oceanic Kingz & Queenz Top Ranking Crown" Competition. In her continuous role of choreographer and creative producer for dancers for Reggae Carnival, she has been instrumental in the creation of work for dancers as a part of successful parties such as Dutty Dancing and featured artists for Heaps Gay, Redbull Weekender & One Day Sundays.
She has performed in and choreographed TV commercials, a feature film, and provided choreography for entertainment events such as International the FIFA World Cup Congress, Mercedes Benz, Apple, Gucci, Hugo Boss and her work has appeared as Support Acts and featured in the shows of International touring Dancehall Reggae Artists such as: Yo Mafia (AUS), Gappy Ranks (UK), Macka B (UK), FIJI (US), J Boog (US), Johnny Osbourne The Godfather of Dancehall (JA), Beenie Man (JA), Sister Nancy (JA) & Konshens (JA).

Please make sure any potential obstructions in the vicinity are removed before you start your lesson so you have a nice clear space to dance.
If you are joining online with another person please key at least 1.5 metres between you where possible.

Dance Central offers an extensive range of dance classes and workshops for adults and teenagers at our centrally located Sydney studio.
Styles include Hip Hop, Funk, Salsa, Bollywood, Dancehall, Belly Dance, BreakDance, Burlesque, Samba, Popping, Showgirl, Booty Dance, Tahitian Dance, Hulahoop and more.
Dance Central Sydney requires 48 hours notice via email prior to the start of a class or event for a full refund, credit or transfer.
Refunds, credits and transfers will not be processed if cancellation occurs within 48 hours of the event commencing.
We do not offer refunds for missed classes.
For cancellations prior to the 48 hour cut off, email Dance Central Sydney to organise a refund, credit or transfer.
There are no fees for refunds, credits or transfers.

Anyone partaking in any Dance Central classes, workshops and/or events must agree to the following three terms and conditions:
1.) LIABILITY WAIVER
There can be a risk of personal injury associated with dance and exercise. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit for the class.
Dance Central accepts no responsibility for any injury incurred during classes, workshops and/or events.
2.) PERSONAL POSSESSIONS
You are responsible for ensuring that your personal possessions are safe and secure at all times.
Dance Central accepts no responsibility for the loss, theft or damage of any personal possessions.
3.) PHOTO & VIDEO
I agree to give Dance Central Sydney unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at Dance Central Sydney classes, workshops and/or events. (for use within Dance Central Sydney marketing materials).
By participating, you agree to all three above conditions.
Dance Central Sydney requires 48 hours notice in writing prior to the class for a full refund or transfer.
In the event that a class is cancelled, students will be notified via text message or email and entitled to a full refund or credit.
