Description

Join local plant expert Fiona Cross and learn about the indigenous plants of Nillumbik. Find out which plants best suit your garden and gain planting and care information so that you can "Live Local, Plant Local".

Many of Nillumbik's local indigenous plant species make ideal garden plants as they are adapted to thrive under local conditions, they fit beautifully within the Nillumbik landscape and they look great in any garden, providing spectacular displays of colour and texture throughout the seasons.

The Shire of Nillumbik is widely recognised for its rich and varied flora and significant natural areas. Approximately 796 different species of indigenous plants have been recorded in the Shire, ranging from small and delicate ground covers to an assortment of majestic trees, shrubs, beautiful wildflowers, grasses and sedges. Many of these plants are now listed as either threatened under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, rare or threatened in Victoria and/or threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.

This is an adult focused learning experience and not suited to young children.

Excellent workshop. Fiona was a fabulous presenter. She was passionate and extremely knowledgeable about her subject and presented the information in a clear, concise and lively manner. People felt comfortable to contribute to discussions and ask questions. It was a great idea to have a tour of Edendale and to see how the indigenous plants had been used in the different spaces on the farm. It was also interesting to visit the propagating area and the nursery. A great follow on to this workshop would one or more workshops in which participants could design and plan an area in their own garden incorporating indigenous plants of Nillumbik with advice from the staff at Edendale. A very worthwhile workshop. Thank you to all involved.
