Traditional Pearl Knotting

Description

Traditional knotting is still the best way to string pearls - or any precious vintage beads - for necklaces, bracelets, etc. Pearls are knotted for two reasons. One is for safety so that if you accidentally break the string, the pearls don't scatter everywhere. The second is to preserve the pearls themselves so that they don't rub together and damage each other.

In this class, you'll learn to knot your own freshwater pearl necklace, and attach clasps. Once you know the techniques, you can restore, redesign and upcycle heirlooms and vintage finds, or buy the exact type of new pearls to create your perfect pearl string.

Guest Tutor: Claudine McPherson has been threading pearls for 25 years and currently does all the stringing and repairs for Ashburton Jewellery in High Street, Ashburton. Claudine's pearl jewellery is ever-popular in Opendrawer's shop.

Date:  Monday 29 January 2018, 1-3:30 pm

Cost: $59

Materials fee (paid directly to Claudine on the day): $25 includes freshwater pearls, thread, 925 Sterling Silver clasps, jump rings & other findings required.

05 April 2017 • Traditional Pearl Knotting

I learned some of the secrets and techniques of pearl knotting and finishing a necklace. Claudine is a patient and very effective teacher. She was able to share her time and attention evenly between all participants. We all completed the project which was very rewarding. Claudine told about the differences in pearls and gave us lots of useful information to gather supplies for future projects. Great value for money spent!👍😃

Fabulous class, Claudine is a great teacher, well paced session, everyone learnt how to make a traditional pearl necklace and by the end of the class we could all do the pearl knots. Claudine's knowledge is vast and she is very generous with her time and information. Thoroughly recommend this class and I want to do more with Claudine in the future. I want to do a bring my own project class.

This was a fascinating class in pearl stringing and something that I haven't seen offered anywhere else before. Claudine was a very informative and generous tutor and I thought it was extremely good value for what I learnt. Would thoroughly recommend!
