Picturing Nature in Watercolour is a one-day online workshop on observing nature and drawing in watercolour with Melbourne artist Judith Van Heeren.

This workshop is suitable for students who have already have some experience, or who have completed our beginners workshop or course. The workshop covers more complex colour mixing and watercolour techniques, whilst guiding the student in the art of observing and focusing on the intimate in the natural world.

The morning session will focus on observational drawing and familiarising with the medium: sketching in pencil; mixing colour through transparent layering; becoming familiar with the brushes and their endless possibilities; exploring wet on wet techniques and wet on dry.

There will be a one-hour lunch break.

In the second half of the day we will combine the various techniques and work on a detailed study in watercolour.

A materials list can be found here, we also have kits available for purchase. These can be collected from the studio or shipped to anywhere within Australia.

Follow Judith's Instagram feed for images of her latest work.

Fitzroy Painting thanks the City of Yarra for their support in helping make this workshop possible.

Judith Van Heeren is a professional artist who has been painting images from the natural world for the past 30 years. She exhibits in private and public galleries, and her work is held in many public and private collections nationally and internationally. Judith has been finalist in prizes including the Geelong contemporary art prize and Waterhouse natural history art prize. While predominantly known for her oil paintings, she considers her watercolours on paper the essence of her practice as the intimacy of paper and the delicacy of watercolour allow her to explore the sublime in the natural world. In recent years Judith has conducted private workshops in addition to her own practice.

This was a great class - perfect pace for online

The online Watercolour workshop with Judith was a great class. Judith is a warm , patient , knowledgable teacher and to boot a great artist. The colour wheel and mixing was , for me , very helpful. I would advise ( even if you think you are competent!) to definitely do the beginners class prior to this class. There is a lot to learn. I personally can't wait until the Fitzroy school reopens and I am able to enrol in on going classes. Zoom is a great tool for the time of the pandemic but nothing replaces being in a physical space with good peeps. Barb Murphy

An informative and fun workshop that extended my watercolour painting skills. It would've been great to have had the opportuntiy to complete the workshop in the studio, but it still worked well on ZOOM. Judith was friendly and made everyone feel relaxed. I highly recommens doing this workshop and I would happily do another workshop with Fitzroy Painting Studio.
