Rest in Pieces Taxidermy Workshop - Melbourne

Beginner Rat

Over 50 people have attended this class

Description

Rest in Pieces invites you to attend an introductory, hands-on workshop where you can explore the fascinating age-old practice of taxidermy.

Rest in Pieces founder and taxidermist, Natalie Delaney-John, will share her knowledge of the dying arts so you can begin your journey into the art of taxidermy: taxis, meaning ‘arrangement’ and derma, meaning ‘skin’.

You don’t need to have any previous taxidermy experience to take part in this workshop. Nat will teach you basic rat anatomy while guiding you through the correct process of skinning, preserving and mounting your specimen.

There are different techniques used for mounting mammal and bird taxidermy. In this workshop, you will learn the technique of using polyurethane foam and wire to mount (recreate) the body of your rat.

At the end of the workshop, you will have created a beautiful piece of art that is full of character. Nat will show you how to pose your rat in a standing position. You are welcome to bring additional props to give your finished rat its own personality – at RIP we encourage creativity!

To end the day, we will help you mount your rat in a glass dome, so you can display your new specimen with confidence.

Everything will be supplied on the day including your rat, materials, an apron, lunch and a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages so that you can sit back, relax and enjoy the day. (Note, alcoholic beverages are only available for students 18+)

Not sure if our rodent friends are really your style? We also have a baby chick beginner taxidermy workshop.

Feeling inspired and want to continue working on your new taxidermy skills once you get home? When you register for the workshop you can book a take home kit in the merchandise section.

Workshop + kit contains:

  • A frozen rat to work on at home
  • A complete set of the same tools and materials used in the workshop (not including a glass dome)
  • A set of instructions so you can follow the same process used in the workshop
  • You can choose between an e-Book or Book

This course is perfect from start to finish - it's fun, it's weird, it's gross, it's challenging, and there's wine. Nat (and Karen!) are funny and charming teachers, and provide the perfect space to learn new things. I recommend this class to anyone who thinks they can stomach it - you're going to have a great time.
