Description

The Yachting Australia Powerboat Handlers Course is a comprehensive boating course offering both theory and onwater boat handling instruction. This course of approximately 20 hours is suitable for all skills levels from novice to expert with the emphasis on hands on training.

The course is part of the nationally recognised Yachting Australia training scheme and is delivered by accredited instructors with extensive boating and training experience.

The Powerboat Handlers course is recognised by Transport Safety Victoria as an approved training course. Successful completion will allow students to apply at VicRoads for their Victorian Recreational Boat Licence without further testing (fees apply).

Course topics include:

  • Trip preparation: including use of safety equipment, emergency procedures, maintenance of motor & boat, fuel, anchoring, weather, vessel trim, marine knots & rope handling.
  • Understanding Victorian Marine Regulations including the rules of the road, navigational marks, lights & signals and mandatory safety equipment.
  • Navigation session of approx. 3 hours using marine charts includes pilotage, setting a compass course, calculating tidal heights, determining trip time, distance & fuel usage.

Onwater handling skills include:

  • Low speed & high speed boat handling, approaching and leaving a mooring & jetty, securing a vessel using lines, anchoring, launch & recovery from a boat ramp & beach, trimming your vessel, man overboard recovery procedures
  • Onwater handling takes place in variety of powerboats up to 6 metres in St Kilda harbor and Port Phillip. Session is approx 6 to 8 hours.

The Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy offers Start Powerboating, Powerboat Handling, and Safety Boat Operator courses under the Yachting Australia Powerboat training scheme, delivered by accredited instructors with extensive boating and training experience.

Yachting Australia Powerboat courses offer: 

  • On-water training in the safe operation of powerboats, including launching, recovery over a ramp or beach, anchoring, manoeuvring at slow & high speed, man overboard procedures and more
  • Theory training in coastal navigation using charts, marine buoyage, marine regulations, safety procedures, basic maintenance, marine knots and more.

What you will learn

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, with a history of over 120 years, is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Victoria with a long list of historical firsts.

Situated at St. Kilda in close proximity to Melbourne central business district, it is regarded as the centre of aquatic events in Victoria.

Most major championships have been held off its shores and the Squadron was the control centre for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic yachting events.

It is a club of which every member has reason to be proud and has a tradition, which every member has an obligation to uphold.

Cancelation & Refund Policy

Refund policy: No refunds are provided after the commencement of the course. Cancellation of any session due to bad weather or other reason will be made up with alternative day(s) nominated by Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy. Cancellation fees will apply for any booking cancellation made prior to commencement of the course as follows: Three or more day’s prior Full Refund less a 10% booking fee. Within 72 hours of commencement 75 % refund; within 48 hours of commencement 50 % refund; within 24 hours of commencement 30 % refund.
