Description

The Yachting Australia Safety Boat Operator Course is an 12 hour advanced boating course aimed at the experienced powerboat handler wanting to fine tune their skills for safety boat or instructor / coach work. Specifically the course is aimed at Race officers & onwater volunteers, instructors and coaches from yacht clubs and allied watersports.

The course provides both theory and onwater practical skills to safely operate a powerboat as a safety boat in regatta or training course environment on enclosed waters. Course prerequisites apply.

Course topics include:

  • Race management: Types of courses, position & tasking, rescue boat strategies
  • Hazard identification: risk management; clothing & equipment choices
  • Rescues: planning & rescue techniques for a variety of watercraft

Onwater handling skills include:

  • Handling: standing off, coming alongside whilst underway, lee shore/kedging
  • Race management: mark laying, recovery, position on course
  • Towing methods: multiple, tows, towing alongside, race dinghies
  • Rescue techniques: dinghies, windsurfers and other water craft

About Powerboat Handling and Boat Licence Courses

The Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy offers Start Powerboating, Powerboat Handling, and Safety Boat Operator courses under the Yachting Australia Powerboat training scheme, delivered by accredited instructors with extensive boating and training experience.

Yachting Australia Powerboat courses offer: 

  • On-water training in the safe operation of powerboats, including launching, recovery over a ramp or beach, anchoring, manoeuvring at slow & high speed, man overboard procedures and more
  • Theory training in coastal navigation using charts, marine buoyage, marine regulations, safety procedures, basic maintenance, marine knots and more.

Appropriate for

Prerequisites: YA Powerboat Handlers course or TL3, current Victorian RBOL plus logged time as powerboat crew/skipper (minimum 6 month period). YA Powerboat logbooks must be brought to this course - The minimum student age is 16 years.

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, with a history of over 120 years, is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Victoria with a long list of historical firsts.

Situated at St. Kilda in close proximity to Melbourne central business district, it is regarded as the centre of aquatic events in Victoria.

Most major championships have been held off its shores and the Squadron was the control centre for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic yachting events.

It is a club of which every member has reason to be proud and has a tradition, which every member has an obligation to uphold.

Cancelation & Refund Policy

Refund policy: No refunds are provided after the commencement of the course. Cancellation of any session due to bad weather or other reason will be made up with alternative day(s) nominated by Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy. Cancellation fees will apply for any booking cancellation made prior to commencement of the course as follows: Three or more day’s prior Full Refund less a 10% booking fee. Within 72 hours of commencement 75 % refund; within 48 hours of commencement 50 % refund; within 24 hours of commencement 30 % refund.
