Sumi-e Painting has its origins in ancient China, but has been practiced in Japan since the eighth century. By the fourteenth century it has been adopted as one of the Zen arts. Using only Black ink and infinite shades of grey, the artwork aims to capture the essence of its subject in simple expressionistic forms.

In this class, students will learn the traditional brush strokes employed in shodo and sumi-e painting, as well as for Japanese calligraphy using black ink as their main medium. You will be able to master simple techniques to create elegant strokes to use for many types of composition.
