Description

She Skills workshops are designed by women, for women.  We want you to feel confident enough to imagine, design and create great things.

In this two (2) day class you will learn how to use a range of hand and power tools incorporating traditional and modern techniques. First we will focus on practicing hand sawing and chiseling and to create range of simple timber joints including mortise and tenon, half lap and housing. We will then create a small timber project utilising modern and traditional techniques.

We teach in a safe, encouraging and social environment with other like minded women.  You shouldn't expect to go home an expert, but you will gain an insight into what's possible with practice!!

She Skills is building a community of confident and capable women, who are happy to get outside their comfort zone and take on a challenge.

We are proud members of the Maker Movement.  In a world of rampant consumption and keeping up with the latest trends, the simple art of making something with your own hands can bring you immeasurable pleasure. And if it’s made well, it might just last you a lifetime.

I thoroughly enjoyed Woodworking 101. The instructor was very informative, helpful and supportive, and she also had a good sense of humour. Unfortunately toothache kept me attending the second day of the course, but I learned quite a bit on the first day. Thank you so much. It's great to have places like She Skills. Women shouldn't have to call a handy"man" for every little thing.

This was a wonderful 2-day course where we learnt all about traditional woodworking and joinery skills. The first day was all about learning the basics and trying out a few different joints on a piece of practice wood. We learnt proper safety when using sharp blades, practised sawing in straight lines (harder than you think!) and chisel techniques for creating nice cuts and avoiding splitting the wood. Day 2 was all about putting our knowledge from day one into practice and creating our own individual project frames. This class was very well run by Carolyn who had a wealth of knowledge and shared it all with us in a down-to-earth, friendly and professional manner. A lot of thought has gone into planning these workshops - the timing of the class was well planned with time even set aside at the end of day 1 to start planning projects and get us thinking ahead of time about what we wanted to build. The classes are small enough to allow for lots of help and guidance from the instructor when needed, and to allow room for creativity when making your project frame on day 2. Everyone leaves with something unique to them! For anyone wanting to learn some new skills in a fun and friendly atmosphere, this class is well worth it!

Unfortunately I was only able to attend the first day, so my comments only relate to that. I learned important practical tips about the use of hand tools especially saws and chisels. I am very keen to practice what I learned at home and to consider designing a small project myself to put the skills to a real use (since I missed day 2). I thought the instructor (Carolyn) was great. She had a very pragmatic approach to teaching along with a brilliant sense of humour. She was also very patient (no question too silly) which helps so much when learning new skills. I'll certainly be keeping my eye on the program of courses to see what I might try next.
