Description

This is an introductory one day workshop for jewellers and metalsmiths to explore techniques for making small hand punches for chasing, repousse and texturing, setting tools and possibly small special purpose hammers.

The course will cover some basic metallurgy, remodeling other tools, shaping, hardening and tempering of silver steel. These are useful skills for those who are unable to buy exactly what they need, can’t afford it or it isn’t available when you need it, or simply for the pleasure of making.

MEET YOUR TUTOR

Valerie Odewahn began her career as a silversmith and maker of handcrafted production jewellery. For many years she worked at Sydney College of the Arts as a Technical Officer. She loves tools and the process of making and restoring them.

27 July 2017 • Make Your Own Tools

I had a great day at the tool making workshop. Valarie has so much knowledge and enthusiasm for making tools, which she generously shared with the class. I came home with a few new tools and skills to use in my jewellery making adventures. Square Peg Studio is a lovely creative space, a great mix of jewellery designers and students, providing a creative outlet for all skill levels, knowledge and experience.

18 July 2017 • Make Your Own Tools

I learnt so much about steel and how to make tools. I am now confident enough to apply the knowledge to making more tools. I am inspired to get started using them on my own work. Great demonstrations, supported practice and very useful notes. Thanks Valerie and Brenda.
