This is an introductory level workshop for fitting commercial patterns, suitable for students and teachers of all skill levels. It is a one day workshop that will train you to understand your own personal Fit Rules. Staring with direct body measurements, each student will work through a detailed analysis of their own commercial pattern. The result will be an altered pattern and a clear list of Fit Rules that you can apply to the first toile of all the commercial patterns in your pattern stash.
This workshop will focus on an understanding of the body and the best location for pattern alterations between sizes and for personal fit issues. The idea is to improve fit and balance and minimise the number of fittings. There will be demonstrations of the initial changes that can be made to commercial patterns prior to making the first sample.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own commercial patterns and sewing projects so that all present will benefit from real life examples of fittings and pattern alterations. It is recommended that you make a clear copy of the pattern you bring to the workshop for alteration, as a back-up and for future comparison.
All materials and equipment for this workshop are provided at the studio with a detailed workbook for students to take home. Don't worry, if you don't have a pattern for the day, we have a variety of commercial patterns at the studio, for you to experiment with during the workshop. Check out this blog post for a sample of the work you'll be doing in this class: Fitting Commercial Patterns - FBA
Great class, I learned a lot of fundamental principles of alterations which I can apply to a range of garments. Anita has fantastic experience which she readily shares in a way that is easy to understand. I was very impressed and will definitely be returning for more classes.
Great course, instruction very supportive and encouraging. Excellent course instruction book to take away and reinforce skills and techniques learnt on the day. The booklet also includes detailed instruction of projects not covered on the day to assist you in furthering your skills. The inclusion of learning the basics of grading was a surprise element - something I wanted to learn for a long time and very useful if you happen to accidently buy the wrong size pattern! For an out of Sydney person the location was easily assessable by train and there are great material shops near by. Just bring and extra large bag to stow your purchases away for the trip home!
I thoroughly enjoyed doing a class at Studio Faro and would recommend the "Fitting Commercial Patterns". The class was good value for money and the instructor had a wealth of knowledge to share from her wide experience in patternmaking and clearly explained the principles involved. The overall experience was well worth spending the day to come away with skills that have helped me in my work place.
