Join Melinda Young for a 3 hour workshop using Coil Weaving to create wearable jewellery.

Learn the basic principles of the ancient (and addictive) technique of coil weaving using a variety of different types of wool, fibre and thread – how to start, complete a coil woven form and finish with jewellery findings to create a beautiful, tactile wearable coil woven piece of jewellery.

You will also learn how to make your own cord with traditional string-making techniques.

Use coil weaving to create a pendant, earrings or brooch during the class.

What to bring
  • There is a material fee of $15 per person – this includes basic jewellery findings, a needles and yarn.
  • Apron.
  • Pencil and Notebook.
  • Sharp sewing/embroidery scissors (if you have them).
  • Any wool, fabric scraps, sewing thread, embroidery floss and beads that you may wish to incorporate into your work.
What to wear

OH&S protocols at SJS require all students to wear CLOSED IN shoes and for long hair to be tied back. We recommend wearng glasses instead of contact lenses and to wear minimal jewellery in a studio environment.

Appropriate for

Some very basic sewing ability is desirable, but not essential.

Sydney Jewellery School (SJS) is Australia's leading independent contemporary jewellery facility for students wishing to learn the art of jewellery making, multi-media creative arts techniques and object 'd art creation.

Many of our classes and the equipment needed to participate are only available within the framework of formal University/TAFE training, SJS is proud to be able to offer short courses in these techniques to all.
