Urban Kitchen, Melbourne’s largest cooking school, is proud to host one of Melbourne’s most revered chefs in a hands-on masterclass on all things duck.
The European’s Ian Curley will show you how to break down the trickiest of birds and cook the various cuts to perfection. Learn how to cook some of his most famous duck dishes – roast duck, duck cannelloni, duck rillette and duck pithivier – along with classic basics like perfect duck legs and stuffed duck neck.
After watching Ian’s demonstration, you start cooking with hands-on instruction. The Urban Kitchen has 44 industrial cooking stations with everything you need to cook like a chef.
This unique, intimate masterclass culminates in the dining room, where you’ll join Ian tasting your kitchen creations with matched wines, followed by cheese from the Spring Street Grocer’s cheese cave.
About Ian Curley
British born, long time Australian resident, Ian Curley is the quintessential classical chef. Maintaining a traditional approach to cooking, Ian has seen food trends come and go, but his philosophy remains the same, ‘Keep it honest and flavoursome – it’s as simple as that.’ When Ian talks about food you can’t help but want to listen, to smell, to taste, to enjoy…He is simply a compelling personality with a wicked sense of humour and a slight stubborn streak – no new age philosophies are going to change the way this man cooks. Ian is currently Executive Chef of The European, City Wine Shop, Melbourne Supper Club and Siglo Rooftop bar in Melbourne, four of the most iconic, popular and long-standing establishments Australia has ever seen.

Urban Kitchen is the culinary hub Melbourne has been waiting for.
Launched in July 2015, Urban Kitchen is the biggest interactive cooking school in the city, offering hands-on classes by top chefs and food industry experts. Owners Georgie and Ben Vile decided to establish Urban Kitchen after a decade building Bay Leaf Catering into Melbourne’s leading boutique caterer.
Centrally located in South Melbourne, the Urban Kitchen has 44 commercial-grade cooking stations in a bright, open space stretching over 250sq/m. No other cooking school in Melbourne gives participants this level of hands-on experience under the guidance of industry experts.
Stunning city views, private dining rooms, a huge outdoor entertaining area and the latest kitchen equipment add to the experience.
Cooking classes are the main game, but Georgie and Ben want Urban Kitchen to become a food knowledge hub, sharing culinary ideas and expertise in the same way Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre supports books and writing. The cutting-edge kitchen space can also be hired for functions and events.
Urban Kitchen also offers an exciting range of corporate team building events, all just minutes from the CBD and walking distance from the South Melbourne Market.
