Creating artworks on a textured, toned background can be very exciting (or daunting)! Preparing the surface is very satisfying, as one can use all sorts of thin paper backgrounds that can be torn or cut up, then glued to the surface, which could be paper, wood or canvas, as long as they aren’t primed with an Oil primer.

You will learn how the placement of the background newsprint will create movement or remain rigid, thus influencing the outcome of the composition.  For instance, strong darks and lights are necessary to add excitement to the composition. These are achieved by using the eraser and charcoal in a particular way. Textures are achieved similarly. You will also learn the importance of Negative Shapes - a crossword puzzle, where each area impacts on the one beside it. The use of a putty rubber or plastic eraser as a drawing tool is very effective for creating both massed areas and fine detail, together with willow charcoal.

This method can be used for any theme, ie still life, landscape, portraiture, figure drawing, as an alternative to simply drawing or painting on a blank surface. If desired, one can prepare the background with watercolour initially, for added effect. This method allows for experimentation, making it an exciting way of incorporating old, failed, waterbased artworks that can be sliced or torn, then glued to another surface to be reworked/recycled in a new form.

  • The approach taught can be used for many applications, once you see that any theme can be explored, with growing confidence, including the recycling of old, failed works on paper
  • Pastels work well when introducing colour to the composition.
  • Your teacher, Margaret, is a practicing artist.  She will provide a set of pre-prepared collage backgrounds for you to practice drawing on with charcoal (and optional pastels) and you will also make your own collage background.
