African drumming Djembe class

Live via Zoom
Over 100 people have attended this class

Description

Dive into the world of djembe with our beginners' community classes! These fully hands-on classes have an emphasis on having fun and are the perfect way to start your journey into West African music. Discover your inner rhythm, with expert guidance from the one and only Magic Mike.

All you need is a djembe, a free zoom account and a laptop or desktop with a mic and speakers. Online students are sent a zoom link on the day which is a livestream of the onsite class.

Get ready for an exhilarating learning experience where we explore traditional West African rhythms over six-week cycles, culminating in biannual student performances. If you miss both the 1st & 2nd week of the cycle, we recommend joining the following cycle.

Born in Zimbabwe, Mike began his musical life with the rhythms of Southern Africa, practicing a variety of musical disciplines since 1998. In 2015 his passion drifted westward to discover the djembe, and intensified when he moved to Melbourne and continued his learning under Simon Fraser and Bassidi Koné. He regularly performs with fiery ensemble Dunu Teké and spends his practice time developing his understanding of West African rhythm. He believes that music is inside each of us - it's just a matter of learning how to speak its language.

Established in 1997, African Drumming has become Australia’s trusted name in West African music.

We are dedicated to sharing the music and culture of West Africa in all that we do: through classes, workshops, study tours and performances which connect a wide audience with this powerful music. Not to mention our instruments! We are one of the largest African music stores in Australia and we love our drums.

In 2011 we relocated from a little store in Grey Street to a larger purposed Head Quarters @ 252 St Kilda Rd, St Kilda. Our HQ houses both the brains and brawn of the operation, with our showroom, studios, offices, warehouse and the all important drum making workshop here under one jamming roof. We love it in St Kilda!

We have a nation-wide network of drummers and dancers under our banner and operate across Australia. Our team includes performers and drum makers from around West Africa such as Mali, Senegal, Ghana and of course homegrown talent too.

We’re always looking to the future and constantly working on the next big project, event and product.

I thought the class was great. EVERYBODY was drumming the beat and call by the very 1st lesson, so it is something anybody interested can do. Unfortunately I didn't know it was a 6 week thing and have commitments over this time. I intend to fulfil the entire 6 weeks even if I only do 2 or 3 for the next run, then the next.

African drumming is a great way to relax, the beat takes you away and let's the real world disappear for a while. Davey is great fun, knows what he is doing, and has enough patience for us all to get it wrong and he still keeps smiling even though we must hurt his ears sometimes I will be coming back for lots more, i am looking forward to getting good enough tonjob in on the beach jamsand to go away for a weekend retreat Thanks Michael
