Description

Ever wanted to bake sourdough bread at home? Creating your own sourdough bread is easier than you might think. Join Rick, of The Life We Want as he demonstrates this age old process and introduces you to the equipment and skills required to get started baking at home.

With a Naturopathic degree and over a decade’s experience teaching nutrition our demonstrator Rick Lavender has a wealth of knowledge to share. Baking sourdough bread has been a natural response for Rick to the challenge of living a healthy life.

At the conclusion of the workshop you will have a basic understanding of :

  • How to create and look after your own Sourdough starter culture
  • What kind of flour to use for the best nutrition and results
  • The equipment needed to produce a great looking and tasting sourdough tin loaf at home
  • How to knead sticky high hydration dough for a more authentic sourdough loaf
  • What bread dough looks and feels like at its various stages of preparation and development
  • How to bake sourdough bread using a bread tin in a home oven

During this hands on workshop you will make your own sourdough starter culture to take home. You will mix and hand knead a 1kg batch of sourdough. Shape and prepare dough for baking at home. And observe Rick baking a finished sourdough loaf.

Participants will be limited to 8 to maintain an informal interactive format.

The workshop will include:

  • Comprehensive workshop notes
  • Sourdough starter culture
  • Discount on a professional quality bread tin

A bread tin will be required for this class. You can bring your own (450g size is good) or purchase one at the workshop at a discounted rate.

12 March 2019 • Sourdough Bread Workshop

Best sourdough bread making class that I have ever attended. In search of the perfect loaf I have attended a few. Extremely knowledgeable teacher who understands the culture of potential bread makers and their desire to experiment. Rick conducts the class and bread making like an orchestra. He pays attention to every detail from the making of the culture to the exact ingredients and the technique for the mixing, proving, folding and baking. He is an excellent teacher and your baking at home with the dough you made in class will prove his teaching quality. Sorry for the pun but they are everywhere in breadmaking. Bread (wheat) has for centuries has been the basis of human survival. Thank you a very appreciative participant

I was hauled along to Rick's sourdough bread making session by my wife, not quite kicking and screaming. At the end I was glad I attended, for I found the session to be informative and relaxed. Rick obviously knows his stuff, and I came away with a loaf to put in the oven and another to get ready for baking the next day. The instructions were clear and Rick explained the process as we went, happily taking questions if any confusion arose among the attendees. I am now awaiting the opportunity to put my new-found knowledge to the test; my wife is hogging the bread tins we purchased while there.

26 February 2019 • Sourdough Bread Workshop

Being frequent bread consumers, my partner and I were eager to jump at the chance to learn how to make our own sourdough loaves. This class was not only extremely informative, but was also really fun! Rick is a great teacher and made us feel comfortable to ask any questions we had. We left feeling fairly confident and have baked all the loaves provided and they’ve turned out great! Bee Sustainable is also a great resource shop for ingredients and supplies, as well as knowledge. Would 100% recommend to people trying to be more self sufficient.
