cbOne Studios in Abbotsford is thrilled to announce a Drawing Masterclass with Barbie Kjar! 

Barbie Kjar, originally hailing from Tasmania and now living in Melbourne, has an artistic journey that delves deep into the realms of portraiture, identity, belonging, and narrative storytelling. Since 1986, she has had over 34 solo exhibitions across Australia. Her most recent achievements include being a celebrated finalist in the National Works on Paper Prize 2024 and the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize 2025. Notably, she was the proud winner of the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize in 2024. 

Beyond her prolific artistic practice, Barbie brings over two decades of teaching experience from prestigious institutions like the University of Tasmania and the National Art School in Sydney. Since 2015, she has also been leading workshops at Baldessin Press, specializing in wood lithography, drypoint, and carborundum. 

It is a pleasure to have such a passionate art maker and experienced teacher leading classes in the cbOne Studios. 


WHAT TO EXPECT

Drawing from Small Scale to Larger Scale Using Charcoal and Inks

  • Introduction: Learn how to transform an idea or sketch into a resolved drawing working from life.
  • Experimentation: Explore drawing techniques using inks and charcoal. Participants will be shown ways of drawing and painting with ink, using brushes, sticks, and washes to create exciting marks.
  • Step-by-Step Guidance: Starting with sketches or studies from life and/or photographs, then work one into a major drawing.
  • Advanced Techniques: For those looking to refine their skills and elevate their artwork.
  • Personalized Guidance: Tailored to your skill level and artistic goals.

Your Teacher

Barbie Kjar (/kɛər/) (born 1957) is an esteemed Australian artist and educator, specializing in printmaking and drawing. Her work is housed in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the Gold Coast City Art Gallery.

Born in Burnie, Tasmania, Kjar’s heritage is a tapestry of Danish, Cornish, and Spanish influences. She began honing her drawing skills as a teenager under Tasmanian portraitist Alan Lester McIntyre. Kjar holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Education from the University of Tasmania and a Masters of Fine Art from RMIT, Melbourne.

Her art, characterized by a signature clean line, delves into portraiture, identity, and narratives, often inspired by mythology and literature. With over 20 years of teaching experience, her recent accolades include winning the 2024 Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize and being a finalist in the 2024 National Works on Paper Prize.

Cancellations & Refunds

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

OR

  • A transfer can be requested 5 days before the class starts. An admin fee of AU$50.00 applies.
  • A credit note can be requested 5 days before the class starts. An admin fee of AU$50.00 applies.

No changes will be allowed after these times.

CB Studios cannot offer any ‘make-up’ classes, courses or workshops missed. 

Absences without notification will forfeit the full class/course fee and receive no credit. By proceeding with your booking you agree to our terms & conditions, and refund policy.

Should CB Studios be forced to cancel a class due to low enrolments, you will be notified as soon as possible prior to the scheduled class and will receive a refund, transfer or a credit voucher for a replacement class, course or workshop.

Collection of work and materials left at the studio: Please understand that our storage capacity is extremely limited.  Work and painting kits will only be retained for one month after which they will be disposed of.  

Anyone partaking in any classes or coming to any events at Chapman & Bailey or organised by Chapman & Bailey must agree to these terms and conditions

1.) LIABILITY WAIVER

I agree to take on full responsibility for any damages, injuries and for physical and/or personal property, which I might incur whilst participating in classes and/or events organised by Chapman & Bailey

2.) PHOTO & VIDEO

I agree to give Chapman & Bailey unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at Chapman & Bailey  classes and events or on Chapman & Bailey premises. (For use of Chapman & Bailey marketing materials).
