
The Fundamentals of Clay
Description
Guided by ceramicist Catherine Guevara, this 6-week beginners course is designed to introduce students to a variety of structural and decorative techniques. In a supportive environment students will be able to utilise the workshop learning to develop their own unique clay pieces. Over the 6-week course pottery techniques including slab building, pinch pots and coiling will be taught as well as surface decoration, experimenting with underglaze painting and other surface treatments including carving. All materials are included – just turn up and create! Finished works will be glazed and fired, food-safe, waterproof, dish-washer safe and available to collect at a later date. Catherine Guevara, an experienced tutor, also has her own dedicated ceramics practice, through which she examines the process of ceramic-making, imbuing layers of clay with memory and history.
All materials and firing are provided and includes:
7kg of clay per student
A range of underglazes, and all the necessary tools to use
Bisque and Glaze firing – food-safe, waterproof and dishwasher safe
What you will learn
- Learn the fundamentals of clay with handbuilding techniques including slab building and coiling
What you will get
- Allow 3 weeks for drying, bisque and glaze firing, then return to collect your work!!

The Corban Estate Arts Centre is located in Henderson, West Auckland.
We’re home to artist studios, our very own cafe, art classes for adults, youth and children, and an ever-changing programme of exhibitions and events.
Set within park-like grounds amongst historic winery buildings. Open Monday to Saturday, entry is free, everybody’s welcome.

Your Teacher
Catherine Guevara is a Colombian visual artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Her body of work comprises education, curation, research, writing and ceramics.
An accomplished visual artist in her country of origin, Guevara moved to Auckland to deepen her practice by further understanding the relationship between Latin American and Pacific cultures.
As curator for the consulate of Colombia, she developed educational programmes and art workshops that aimed to help with the settlement of the Latin American community in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

- Cancellation by Corban Estate Arts Centre entitles the participant to a FULL REFUND.
- Cancellation by participant up until 7 days before the workshop commences results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
- Cancellation by participant within 7 days of the workshop commencement date results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 30% admin & booking fee.
- Cancellation by participant on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given.
