This 1-day workshop with contemporary artist Brie Rate is an introduction to a variety of hand paper making techniques that can be completed at home, without the use of commercial machines. You will gain the skills you need turn organic and recycled material into pulp with a focus on sustainability and expanding the notion of what paper can be.  
 
Learn how to design and form basic sheets, before moving onto creative methods such as embedding, pressing, stencilling, freehand application (pulp painting) and object assemblages.
 
Students will have made several sheets of paper which are works of art in themselves, which could then be used in combination with other processes (such as writing, drawing, painting, printmaking or collage) to explore and express ideas.

Your Teacher

Rooted in observation, Brie Rate’s interdisciplinary practice narrates connecting to the world through drawing, walking and repurposing found and foraged material. Her visual work frequently explores the natural phenomena of urban environments and is preoccupied with questions of belonging and ecological stability.

Rate holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts completed across Ilam School of Fine Art, University of Canterbury and Elam School of Fine Art, University of Auckland. She has been involved in a number of group shows, including as a Parkin Drawing Prize finalist in 2023.

As a printmaker and paper maker, Rate is passionate about sharing creative skills which are sustainable, accessible, and consider our complex relationship with the Earth. She has taught a range of age groups both in New Zealand and overseas.

We’re home to artist studios, our very own cafe, art classes for adults, youth and children, and an ever-changing programme of exhibitions and events.

Set within park-like grounds amongst historic winery buildings. Open Monday to Saturday, entry is free, everybody’s welcome.

Excellent one day class with so much time for exploration and experimenting with colours and textures . Brie was a lovely tutor who provided good demo’s and then one on one assistance when required.

  • Cancellation by participant up until 7 days before the workshop commences results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant within 7 days of the workshop commencement date results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 30% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given.

  • A deposit is required to secure your place and payment must be made in full to confirm your booking. Part Payment options are available at time of booking.
