Introduction to Classical Latin
Discover the language that shaped the foundation of Western civilisation with our Introduction to Classical Latin course. Designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the influential language of Ancient Rome.
Latin was the language of Caesar, Cicero and Virgil, and remained the language of diplomacy, science and scholarship in Europe for centuries. It has profoundly influenced modern Romance languages such as Italian and French, and continues to shape English vocabulary, particularly in legal and medical fields. By learning Latin, you will gain insight into Western intellectual history and a deeper understanding of classical texts and culture.
Using the renowned Cambridge Latin Course (Book 1), you will follow the story of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus and his household in Pompeii before the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Through engaging readings and structured exercises, you will build foundational skills in grammar, vocabulary and translation while exploring the cultural and historical context of Ancient Rome.
