Creating a Sensory Garden

Join Sustainable Gardening Australia for an inspiring session on designing gardens that engage every sense. Learn how to weave sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste into your garden to create beautiful, inclusive spaces that restore wellbeing and invite deeper connection with nature.

Working through each of the senses, you’ll learn how to select plants and materials that stimulate them, how to design for accessibility, and use sensory gardens to foster connection, relaxation, and mental health. Whether you’re a home gardener, educator, or health professional, you’ll come away with practical ideas and real-world examples to help you bring your own sensory garden to life—no matter the size or setting.

The session will be delivered by Teresa Day who will cover:

  • What makes a sensory garden special—aren’t all gardens sensory?
  • How the five senses shape garden design
  • Choosing plants and materials for maximum sensory impact
  • Designing for accessibility and inclusivity
  • Case studies from home gardens, schools, care homes, and public spaces
  • How to get started with your own sensory garden

This event is a ‘pay as you feel’ event.  A QR code will be displayed at the end of the session, and you can make a donation should you want to. All monies raised will be used to continue to develop our Climate Gardening Hub.
