We are a contemporary jewellery studio and gallery run by local jeweller Philip Noakes, who has over forty years experience in making and teaching in the industry. Philip has exhibited extensively around Australia, and makes his own work and private commisions, as well as teaching from the studio.

Contemporary Metal offers jewellers and students access to a fully equipped studio including: rolling mill, soldering and melting torches, pendant drills, vacuum casting, vulcaniser and wax injector, hydraulic press, lathe, tumbler, polisher, ultrasonic, large dapping sets and lapidary equipment.

We have benches available for hire on a casual, weekly or ongoing basis.

04 July 2019 • Hammered Bangle -Three Hour Class

Absolutely loved this class! I made myself 3 gorgeous silver bracelets that I haven't taken off since and I've definitely found my new hobby. I found hammering the shape to be so relaxing :)

30 June 2019 • Consolidate & Advance Jewellery Making (Stage 4-9)

I finished stage four a couple of weeks ago and now have started stage five. Each stage is more technically demanding but I feel that given the coaching and tutoring I have had so far then I will cope with this. Additionally the more demanding it is; the more enjoyable the course. Going to Contemporary Metal each Thursday morning is an experience I enjoy and look forward to. The people, both students and staff are friendly and no matter what stage they may be working on are interested in what you are doing. Phil is an Artisan in his own right, and the more I get to know him the more I appreciate his skill and also his easy going method of teaching. There is no criticism for any mistakes, we get shown where we go wrong and how to correct it. That is what teaching is all about. It is this environment and coaching that is encouraging me to further my skills, (mmm ???) and get full enjoyment from Contemporary Metal. Phil has had a long and illustrious career in Silversmithing, however I dare say that in an alternative world he may have had equally illustrious career as a DJ:) Kevin Good.

I really enjoyed stage 4 and making the straight collet ring with facetted gem. The help I received from Phil and Co. was great. The finished ring is beautiful and I am confident I can continue to produce well-made, quality jewellery at home.
