Learn the foundational skills of the world's oldest trade in 2 days.  With a combination of hand forging and striking (using a sledge hammer to work in pairs) you will work on completing your own plant stand/plinth/side table/stool. 

Using techniques including: forging, tapering, riveting, twisting and the use of a number of job specific hand tools, we will forge out the projects legs and frame and finish it with a lovely piece of timber on top.

Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of how to a gas furnace to heat steel.
  • Become familiar with parts of the anvil and how they can be used.
  • Use of various hand forging techniques including: tapering, bending, riveting, fullering and finishing.
  • Work safely in a group environment with other blacksmiths.
  • Gain an understanding of some generally used steels and alloys.

Adaptations

The finished works can include several artistic features to customize the appearance and ensure each job is individual. Various techniques will be demonstrated to help you gain an understanding of what is possible and from there you can work toward your own custom design.

7 hours x 2 Days

You will learn

  • Use of various hand forging techniques including: tapering, bending, twisting, riveting, fullering and finishing
  • Become acquainted with the parts and use of an anvil
  • Learn the aspects of safely heating steel using a gas furnace

You will get

  • All materials needed for completion are included in the class fee
  • Safety gear including: leather blacksmithing aprons, eye protection and ear plugs will be provided (or can be brought in if preferred)
  • Students will take home some custom forged wall hanging coat hooks

Appropriate for

All with an interest in blacksmithing, aged 15 and up.


Preparation

What to wear

Please wear clothing appropriate for a workshop. This includes long pants and sleeves preferably natural fibre, solid shoes/boots

Couldn't recommend the Blacksmith Introduction course enough. Was a great few days with James and the other students. Will definitely be booking another course to expand my blacksmithing knowledge!
