Private Group Class for up to 8 on the Wheel
(Private Dates Available)
Description
Looking for something fun, hands-on, and a little bit different to do with your group? Our one-off group pottery class at Kiln Studio is the perfect way to connect, unwind, and get a little muddy together. Whether it’s a birthday, team day, hen do, or just a bunch of mates wanting to try something new—we’ve got you covered.
You’ll step into our cozy, light-filled studio and get straight into the good stuff: spinning clay, sculpting by hand, laughing a lot, and maybe even discovering a hidden talent or two. No experience needed—just a willingness to give it a go. We’ll guide your group through a playful, beginner-friendly session where everyone makes something with their own two hands (and probably leaves with clay on their nose).
Each session is private to your group and fully hosted by one of our lovely tutors, so the vibe is relaxed, fun, and tailored to suit you. You’ll get a taste of throwing on the wheel or hand-building a little masterpiece*—then choose your favourite piece to be glazed and fired by us after the session, ready for pickup a few weeks later.
It’s creative, messy, and surprisingly meditative… plus, it’s a brilliant way to spend time together that doesn’t involve screens or sitting in a café. Just shared laughs, muddy hands, and something real to show for it at the end.
We welcome groups big and small—so if you’re planning something special, or just want a good excuse to hang out and try something new, book in and come play with clay. Trust us, you’ll be talking about it for ages.
*We're pretty good but we're not miracle workers. We can't make any guarantees.
Please reach out - Hi@kilnstudio.nz - if you have any questions.
If you're interested in more of a 1 on 1 lesson to hone your skills, check out our other listing.
What you will learn
- A chance to try throwing on the pottery wheel (yep, like in the movies)
- Tips for shaping, smoothing, and adding personal flair to your piece
- How fun, creative, and calming it is to play with clay together
What you will get
- Two finished piece per person, glazed and fired by us, ready for pickup later (Additional pieces can be included for a fee)
We're a bit hard to find right now! You're looking for the door the says NO ACCESS! I know, I know... we're working on it! But Kiln is located inside that door and up the stairs to the right.
There's usually heaps of parking outside of business hours in Buxton Square carpark. Free after 5pm weekdays, 1pm Saturday and all of Sunday.
Call Jamie on 027 298 0788 or Tom on 027 372 2143 if you have any trouble finding us.
What to bring
- Just yourself and a willingness to get your hands dirty! We provide all the clay, tools, aprons, and firing—you don’t need to bring a thing. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit mucky (pottery has a way of spreading the joy), and we’ll take care of the rest.
What to wear
There’s no dress code, but we recommend comfy clothes you don’t mind getting a bit messy—pottery is hands-on and clay has a way of sneaking onto sleeves and knees. Closed-toe shoes are best, and we’ll provide aprons to help keep the splatter to a minimum. Bonus points for scrunchies or hats if you’ve got long hair—it’s nice to keep it out of the clay!
Appropriate for
it’s for people who love trying new things, enjoy a bit of laughter and mess, and want to make something real—with the added bonus of taking home a little handmade memory.
Kiln Studio is a ceramic based studio in the centre of Nelson City, Aotearoa.
Your Teacher
Our tutors are absolute legends. They’re the kind of people who’ll cheer you on while you wrestle with your first wonky pot, celebrate your accidental masterpieces, and somehow manage to make learning feel more like hanging out with really lovely, clay-covered friends. Friendly, down-to-earth, and genuinely excited to share the joy of pottery, they’ve got that rare combo of serious skills and zero ego. They’ll meet you wherever you’re at—no pressure, no art school snobbery, just encouragement, good laughs, and a few helpful tips that actually make sense. You’ll feel at home from the moment you walk in.
