🧡TEENS | Sewing 1: Machine Basics

🧡TEENS | Sewing 1: Machine Basics

Ages 12-17 | Level 1: Absolute Beginner

Description

  • Skill Level 1 - Absolute Beginner: No previous sewing experience required

This class is perfect for teens who are interested in sewing and need to learn their way around a sewing machine -  the power tool of sewing.

This class is an introduction to sewing machines, teens will get lots of hands on practice working on a sewing machine.

Bring your own sewing machine or hire a studio sewing machine.

They will learn:

  • How to wind a bobbin and insert it properly
  • How to thread the machine
  • How to operate the machine and feed the fabric properly
  • Understand different stitch types and what the dials on a machine do
  • How to stitch secure seams and how to overcast the edge of the fabric

At the end of the class each teen will leave with the knowledge and practice of using a sewing machine and will be ready to attend Skill Level 1 classes/events.

Enclosed shoes required at all times in the studio.

Bring a water bottle and a snack.

Want to Bring Your Own Sewing Machine?

Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer machines are welcome.
No mini, toy or handheld sewing machines are permitted - they are not suitable for this event.
If you're unsure, get in touch before booking.

Make sure the machine is in proper working order

  • If you’re not sure how to check, if it’s a second hand machine or it hasn’t been used in a few years, take it to a reputable sewing machine workshop, they may suggest it needs to be serviced
  • Avoid advertisers on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace, in my experience, they don’t do a good job and sometimes make the machine worse.
  • This avoids frustration in class due to a faulty machine.

Be sure to bring the power cord and foot control pedal & extra accessories

  • Bring the "bits & bobs" that come with your machine - such as extra presser feet, spare needles, etc
  • Make sure the power cord and foot control pedal are in good condition (i.e. no exposed wires) and are stored with the machine so they are not forgotten
  • If you have  the manual - bring it in case it's required.

Ensure there are 2-3 empty spare bobbins with the machine

  • These are essential to operating the sewing machine - some machines do not work with generic bobbins
  • if not, be sure to purchase the correct type - if you’re not sure make a note of your sewing machine brand and model (taking a photo is a good idea too) and visit a reputable sewing machine workshop near to you

Make It Nifty holds sewing and dressmaking classes in Bracken Ridge 30 minutes North of Brisbane CBD.

At Make It Nifty students are taught sewing techniques and knowledge while having a good time.

Students are encouraged to “give it a go”; progress is better than perfection. Students should leave class feeling happy that they have tried something new; proud that they made something with their own two hands and skill, and confident they could do it again.

Make It Nifty is a (very) small private business that was started in 2015 on Vanessa’s dining table.

Make It Nifty is now located in a studio space on the ground floor of Vanessa’s home in Bracken Ridge.
