Description

Australia’s unique ecology means our indigenous plants, including native grasses, sedges, and dense ground covers, are unlike any others. So, traditional gardening plant care techniques can often be ineffective or even harmful. Yet doing nothing isn't really an option either.

In this one-hour Master Class session, you’ll learn how to properly maintain these distinctive plants. Margaret Allan will guide you through the best practices for maintaining the health of indigenous plants, offering expert insights into how their needs differ from those of traditional garden plants. Special attention will be given to grasses, sedges, and groundcovers—plants that require a different approach to care, from watering and mulching to trimming and general maintenance.

The session will cover:

  • Removing biomass from grasses
  • Trimming groundcovers
  • Foliage care and pruning hardy indigenous shrubs
  • Watering and feeding indigenous plants

Beyond basic maintenance, you'll also explore how to recognize plant life cycles, when plants have completed their life cycle, and how to support their self-propagation. This session will help you nurture your garden in a way that promotes natural regeneration and sustainability.

This session is part of a three part series called “Nurturing Indigenous Gardens”. Other topics include  ‘Ecological Garden Design: Lessons From the Bush’ and ‘Beyond plants - what else to include’.  Book the Series Package for discount. Friends of SGA receive a 15% discount on Master Class full price tickets. You can become a Friend of SGA here. Green Garden Professional (GGPs) receive a 30% discount.

Your Teacher

Marg first honed her skills in garden maintenance on a one-hectare bush block near Bendigo. This led her to enrol in a Cert IV in Horticulture. From this she started working in plant nurseries where, as well as retail duties, she performed home visits to give tailored advice to people.

As a five-year diversion, Marg was Head Gardener at Abbotsford Convent where she led a group of keen volunteers and other paid staff. The six-hectare site on the Yarra River was a challenging role due to the huge number of visitors each year.

She currently works in a retail and consulting role for Victorian Indigenous Nurseries Co-operative. VINC produces almost half a million tubes of indigenous plants annually supplying the revegetation community. The small retail space caters to home gardeners; visitors can get advice on soil preparation and species selection.

She also has a business preparing garden designs and performing garden maintenance.
