The Keyhole Surgeon
The Keyhole Surgeon is Aaron Smith, a locksmith with a love for safes, antique locks and teaching traditional locksmithing methods – his aim is to preserve the skills of this trade through promoting repair and restoration of locks, padlocks and safes, not replacing them.
Aaron offers a workshop experience like no other where participants make their own brass padlock and cut their own key using original techniques and hand tools that have not changed since the early 1800’s.
Using parts made by Australia’s oldest operating lock manufacturer, Jacksons of Launceston, participants mark out their parts, hand drill and file them to make a working lock. Once the components are ready, the next step is to hand cut a key to suit, using skills that are slowly becoming lost in the Locksmithing trade with the ever increasing use of technology.
The workshops are held in stunning and inspiring locations such as the Abbotsford Convent, a home for talented artists, and the Rundell & Rundell workshop in Kyneton, which is quickly becoming the epicentre of the Lost & Rare Trades in Australia.

Please note that the workshops are suited to those even with beginner skills in using hand tools; however, there may be long periods of standing during the workshop. There is some exertion required during the use of the hand tools.
Full day workshop 9am to 5pm. Please note that the workshop commences at 9am sharp. So please allow yourself sufficient time to park and find the workshop (at least 15 minutes in Abbotsford).
Due to the nature of the workshop participants below 16 years of age are not permitted. Participants under the age of 18 require a paying adult (over 18) to accompany them.
Workshops require a minimum of four (4) participants to proceed. Participants will be advised in no less than seven (7) days if the workshop they have booked in for will not be going ahead. A full refund will be offered or alternatively you may choose another available workshop date within 12 months.
If the participant fails to attend the subsequent workshop to which they have transferred to or the 12 months expires, they will forfeit all payment.
