Open your cartooning eye and enter the world of comics!

This hands on unique and practical workshop with Melbourne artist and collaborator Michael P Fikaris will help you develop and understand the qualities and possibilities of ‘mini comics’ and ‘comic zines’ today, with demonstrations and exercises to help you always stay creative in this area.

Beginning with the importance of the ‘doodle’ and working through composition and preparation for print, these 3 hours will have you ready to begin on your quest. 

This workshop is ideal for anyone wanting to make comic art from their illustrations OR those wanting to learn more regarding contemporary comics. You’ll walk away with loads of new knowledge about comic zines, self publishing, autobiographical work and the beauty of sequential narratives, opening up a whole new appreciation for this amazing field of art that is always growing in appreciation!

ABOUT MICHAEL FIKARIS

Michael P Fikaris is a freelance artist based in Melbourne who has published over 100 comic book zines and runs a comic book collective called Silent Army.

His comic work began as everyday life and autobiographical short pieces. He started elaborating on ‘traditional comic art’ when living in Canada and experiencing the wonderful variety of french canadian comic publishers there. In recent years he worked with a community in East Timor to create a graphic novel and is currently finishing two new colour books to be printed in two different parts of the world. He has worked with many fine people and organizations locally and abroad and his works have been collected by all sorts, including the National Gallery of Australia.
