Description

Sketching is a great skill that helps us to design, communicate, and understand the world. And Fitzroy is a fantastic place to draw, with heaps of history and grit.In this workshop we will develop our urban sketching skills. We will walk through Fitzroy’s alleys, and develop an eye for a strong image. We will explore interesting ways to use pens and pencils, focussing in on linework and graphic styles. Good idea, unfortunately the instructor spoiled the experience for me when I overheard him dismissing my partner's initial drawing as 'too expressive' and following up with some harsh criticism of her line-work. The dissmissiveness and harshness of this criticism might be appropriate between professional artists or in the context of university-level arts courses, but for a customer looking for a relaxed morning activity it was totally inappropriate. To be totally frank, I thought the instructor sounded like a bit of a prick. We were there for a fun morning activity, not to be torn-down by a man-child for not reproducing his visual style. In terms of constructive criticism for future classes, I think it would be a good idea for the instructor to remember that customers to these classes are not from an art background and may not be as enamoured with the artist's work as he himself is. Given that my partner then knocked-out a 3 min sketch which simply aped the instructors style, and that this drawing was chosen by the instructor as one of the best of the day, I'd suggest there is a unhealthy dose of ego implicit in his initial criticism.

I learnt valuable techniques for sketching and drawing that will help me in the future. The teacher was extremely talented and enthusiastic to help everyone in the class and it was worth every cent. It was a nice setting but the background music made it a bit hard to concentrate at times when we were in the studio. A really fun thing to do.
