Finishing Techniques for Handwoven Textiles


Learn to finish your handwoven textiles with a range of on-loom and off-loom finishing techniques.

You will need to bring your loom to the Guild already warped for the workshop. Some samples will also be provided for you to use.

You will make your own mini sampler of techniques to help you pick the right finishing technique for your future projects.

 On loom samples include the following finishes

  • Italian hemstitching
  • ladder hemstitching
  • twined finish
  • knotted finish

Off loom samples include the following finishes

  • Damascus edge
  • Philippine edge
  • four strand braid
  • whipping

You will learn

  • You will also get a learner’s workbook for use in the workshop with a list of printed and online references to use as a reminder and to let you continue your learning

Appropriate for

Weavers who have completed at least an introductory weaving course. You must be confident warping your loom and weaving plain weave independently


Preparation

What to bring

  • Your warped rigid heddle loom, frame or table loom, and additional yarn for weaving
  • at least one empty stick shuttle a little contrast colour yarn in the same thickness as your warp yarn, or a little thinner some beads with a hole that will fit two warp strands if you have beads at home - no need to buy if you don't have them
  • an awl or hat pin or cable needle if you have one - no need to buy if you don't have them. Reading glasses, if you use them. Face masks welcome

Your Teacher

Karen is a floor loom weaver who coordinates our Handweavers and Spinners Guild Weave Study Group. She has been crafting all her life and started weaving early. Her Swedish grandmother taught her basic weaving at the age of six using a counterbalance loom. She currently alternates weaving on a Druva four shaft floor loom and a small countermarche loom.

If you can't attend the class:

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

  • A refund can be requested 7 days before class starts. Free of charge.
  • A transfer can be requested 7 days before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.
