Pole Lathe Turning: Introduction to Woodturning

A 2½-hour introduction to woodturning using a foot powered spring pole lathe.

This is a hands-on, beginner-friendly class where you'll learn the basics of turning green wood into objects like a rolling pin, garden dibber, or candlestick. After a brief description of how to prepare the wood for turning, we will practice to control the tools and create clean cuts and shapes.

Beginning with a roughing gouge to create our basic outline and then a flat chisel to refine the surface. Along the way, you'll gain a greater appreciation for the rhythmic nature of the work and the beauty of sustainably sourced wood.

Traditional Green Woodworking Courses:

Crafting Connection Through Wood with Hand Tool Woodworking

At Wisdom Through Wood, we believe there’s a deep satisfaction in creating something useful and beautiful with your own hands. Our approach to green woodworking—using freshly cut, unseasoned timber—brings you into direct relationship with the materials, tools, and your intentions. These courses aren’t just about learning techniques; they’re about rediscovering the joy of working purposefully and in rhythm with nature

.Green woodworking encourages the use of hand tools to shape green wood before it seasons. This allows for a more playful and responsive approach to working with the natural qualities of the material. By learning to ‘follow the grain’ in the wood we create unique and beautiful objects that embody the story of the tree as well as the intention of the maker.

The act of making—a spoon that stirs your favourite dish, a stool that lives in your home for generations, or a chair shaped from a tree you helped gather from the forest—is profoundly rewarding. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced woodworker, our courses will help you experience this time honoured and fulfilling craft, with traditional tools in hand and forest all around you.
