This one-day workshop will take you through a series of steps exploring the local urban landscape with Melbourne artist John Waller.
Many students want to explore abstraction but don't know how to begin. This workshop will provide the student with practical steps and a range of approaches to create resource material with which to create strong and dynamic work.
We will start the day making a series of quick sketches outdoors, gathering information to take back to the studio to make a series of exploratory monochromatic studies during which morning tea will be served. Media will include a combination of pencil, charcoal, ink and acrylics, and we will look at mark-making, tonal values, composition and scale as a starting point to shift our studies towards abstraction in subsequent works.
In the afternoon session we will assess the studies made, selecting one or more to work from and further develop a final work. Students are encouraged to be experimental, and to accept that the process is an integral part of the outcome.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those wanting to explore abstraction for the first time. It offers practical techniques and demonstrations on how to start, expand and develop ideas, as well as a basic understanding of composition, and selecting colour palettes.
All materials, morning and afternoon tea are provided. There is a 45-minute lunch break, and there are plenty of local cafes nearby to grab a quick bite.
