This 10-week course will introduce participants to working with tools (conventional tools, hand-held power tools, and some stand-alone power tools) and working with timber. 

The course is a great learning space for people who want to learn woodwork as a hobby or use it as a pathway to other training or employment options. Participants can develop and build their designs as part of the course.

• Spices holder / box
• Serving Board / Charcuterie Board (May require specialty timber kit to be purchased specifically)
• Couch side table or entrance Keys table
• Plant stand
• Herbs/flowers planter box
• Monitor Riser for office desk
• Table Top Lamp stand (Electronics sourced independently)

(all projects will be built from recycled and sustainably sourced timber, however if participants wish to bring their own timber, it’s discussed in the first class to ensure suitability).

What will you learn

• Recognise and name basic hand held tools and power tools
• Safe and appropriate use of these tools, and how to maintain them
• How to mark and measure in a precise way
• Simple joinery techniques and assembly
• How to plan and draw a project
• Different finishing and sanding techniques

What to expect from the course

The first class introduces participants to the space and an overview of safety and tools available to use is given. Set projects are introduced and participants are encouraged to leave the first session with an idea of the space, tools and the project they want to make.

The second class sees participants selecting timber and starting to cut pieces to size, typically first using a Combination Mitre Saw. Joinery methods are discussed and project designs are finalised.

Throughout the remainder of the classes, projects are progressed iteratively through the stages of component fabrication, stages of assembly and ‘glueups’ and take 3D form around 6th-8th sessions after which finishing is generally performed

*To be eligible for an ACFE funded place in the course you must be an Australian, a New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident. You can also be eligible if you're an asylum seeker in specified visa categories, referred by a Jobs Victoria Employment Network provider.
