Why Inner North (Northcote & Fitzroy)?
Melbourne's inner north carries more running art classes than any other part of the city. The strip from Fitzroy up through Northcote, Carlton North and Coburg is dense with converted warehouses, shopfront studios and long-standing craft guilds, and most of it is walkable from a tram stop.
The anchor is Paint With Me Melbourne on High Street in Northcote, which runs the widest schedule of any art studio on the platform — school-holiday classes for kids, all-ages family sessions and evening paint-and-sip nights, most of them beginner-friendly with all materials supplied.
For traditional craft, the Handweavers & Spinners Guild of Victoria in Carlton North teaches spinning, weaving and fibre work, including certificate-level courses for people who want to go deep rather than dabble. In Fitzroy, Sarah Schembri Ceramics runs hand-forming ceramics workshops in a small-group studio setting.
Further north in Coburg, Pink Ember Studio and Frances Cannon Art run smaller, artist-led sessions — worth watching if you want something less structured than a term course.
