Box Hill & Eltham Art Studios

Where Melbourne's east keeps its life drawing rooms, mosaic benches and mud-brick artist colony.

The Heritage

Why Eastern Suburbs (Box Hill & Eltham)?

Melbourne's east trades inner-city bustle for space. Studios here run larger rooms, longer sessions and the kind of equipment that does not fit in a shopfront — which is why the region holds the city's most consistent life drawing programme and its only heritage artist colony.

The Box Hill Art Group works out of the Box Hill Community Arts Centre and runs the deepest drawing and painting programme in the east: bookable life drawing on both Wednesdays and Saturdays, plus tutored term courses in oil, watercolour and mixed media. The Wednesday life drawing session is rated 4.9 from 69 reviews.

Out in Eltham, Montsalvat Arts Education teaches inside Australia's oldest continuously operating artists' colony — mud-brick halls, a wood-fired Anagama kiln and a Raku firing programme where work is pulled glowing from the kiln and cooled in the open. Montsalvat also runs mosaic workshops and watercolour sessions in the same grounds.

The east suits people who want a regular practice rather than a one-off. Most of what runs here is either a term course or a repeating weekly session you can book into as it suits.
