Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most pottery wheel classes include all materials. For example, the Friday Night Taster Wheel Throwing class at Slow Clay Centre includes structured instruction, hands-on wheel time, two pieces glazed and kiln-fired, and all materials. The Beginner's Wheel course similarly includes materials as part of the course structure. Material costs vary by course level—Stage 1 jewellery students receive all materials included, while Stage 2 students pay for silver based on weight.

  • Class sizes are capped to ensure adequate instruction. The Friday Night Taster Wheel Throwing class is limited to 12 students. Jewellery taster classes have a maximum of 7 people. The Linocut Printmaking class is limited to 4 students due to home studio space. Smaller class sizes allow for personalized attention from experienced instructors.

  • Course lengths vary by type. Taster sessions are typically 2-3 hours (such as the Friday Night Taster at 2 hours). Full beginner courses run 8 weeks with weekly classes—for example, Slow Clay's Beginner's Wheel course meets weekly for 8 weeks. Intensive workshops span full weekends (2 days). Jewellery courses span 5 weeks with 3.5-hour classes per week at each stage level.

  • No prior experience is required for most classes. The Painting for Beginners class explicitly welcomes absolute beginners who have never painted before. The Jewellery Taster states 'you do not need to be artistic or creative.' Linocut Printmaking and many other classes accommodate both complete beginners and those with some experience. Some advanced courses do require prerequisites—for example, Intermediate and Advanced wheel throwing classes require completion of at least two beginner terms or equivalent.

  • Finished pieces are fired and can be collected later. In the Friday Night Taster Wheel Throwing class, two glazed and kiln-fired pieces are available for collection a few weeks after the class. The Beginner's Wheel course and Family Pottery Class similarly have pieces fired for collection or postage at your own cost within approximately 3 weeks.

  • Yes, multiple children's classes are available. Kids Painting classes (5yo+) include school holiday workshops with all materials supplied. Clay Club for kids runs during school holidays (9:30am-12pm over two consecutive mornings) and regular term classes where children can use the potter's wheel. Family Pottery Classes accommodate an adult and child together, with additional child tickets available. Primary schooler art classes cover various techniques including painting, sewing, and paper crafts.
