Empowering Hairdressers: DV Response Training
Description
Seeking help for domestic and family violence is difficult. Many people choose to talk to someone they trust, like their hairdresser or beauty therapist. Our training explores the gendered nature of family violence and is designed to give salon professionals the tools to confidently respond to someone experiencing family violence. For many, this can be lifesaving.
Participants will gain confidence in understanding their role in responding to family violence, and learn how to:
- RECOGNISE signs of family violence they may see in a salon setting
- Know how to RESPOND appropriately to a family violence disclosure they may receive from a client or colleague
- Know how to safely REFER a client or colleague to find a family violence service

WHO WE ARE
HaiR-3Rs is a project of the Education and Training team at FVREE, a family violence service in Melbourne. Our team are qualified educators with backgrounds in family violence support, primary prevention, sexuality education, respectful relationships and inclusive practice. We are passionate about changing the way society views family violence, and believe with proper training everyone can play a role in preventing violence. Our vision is a community free from violence, where everyone is safe.
OUR HISTORY
Development of HaiR-3Rs began in 2016 with the help of overseas programs Cut It Out Canada and Family Violence – It’s Not OK. The pilot program launched to Melbourne salons in 2018, with 309 salon professionals trained during the 6 month period. When government funding ceased, we continued training to meet the demand for this critical education. We are the only ongoing, national family violence training program for the Australian hair, beauty and barbering industry, with 1000+ trained salon professionals (and counting!)
