Afro Soca - 1.5hours
Whine your hips to the upbeat rhythms of Soca and Afrobeat music while learning popular Caribbean dances in a class that fuses both African and Caribbean dance styles. Afrosoca is a unique dance technique developed by Kira to reflect the ongoing exchange and influence of African based cultures on popular music and dance. Dance movements take their inspiration from various diaspora forms including: Popular Afrobeats, dancehall soca, traditional West African, Congolese, Caribbean folkloric, Indian, Latin, Modern and Hip Hop. Special focus will be given to the gyrating hip movements known as “whining,” which whips your core into shape all while having fun dancing.
The workshop will be a unique fusion of Kira Divine's signature Afro Soca style mixed with the electronic dance moves seen in recent PNAU videos and live performances. Students can look forward to learning some of those moves from the popular PNAU music videos "Chameleon" and "Go Bang" during the warm-up and center floor exercises. After learning a combination utilizing the steps learned during the warm-up, the workshop will culminate with a lively freestyle circle where students are encoraged to "let loose" and share their newly acquired moves.
