Description

This one-day course aims to equip students with the techniques they will need to confidently forge ahead with creative blade forming projects of their own. Starting with a section of steel and working through to a heat treated and finished herb chopper.

During this course students will gain insight to working with hardening steels and the considerations to be made in forging and heat-treating carbon steel blades.

The day starts with an introduction to the forging process of breaking down and drawing stock efficiently and forming the handle and bevels.

Then a bench grinder is used to correct the bevels before heat treating the blades to ensure the steel becomes hard wearing.

In the afternoon, hand finishing techniques are used to finalise the aesthetics of the completed work.

The quick course is designed to encompass a full toolbox of techniques to aid anyone looking to begin blade smithing as a hobby.

Great introduction to forging and shaping techniques with very detailed, step by step instruction. Really appreciated the ‘learning by doing’ approach.

We had a fantastic time creating herb choppers as a couple! Our blacksmith sensei Matt guided us through the process patiently and with wisdom. A very fun time. Next time I would bring a bandana to keep my hard-earned sweat out of my eyes.
