Hand forged silver granulated ring

Over 10 people have attended this class

Description

Welcome to the Granulated Ring class!

This is hands-on, fun filled class for the metal jewellery enthusiast!
We’ll be learning the ancient art of granulation- working it into a modern ring in your choice of design, so there is plenty to keep us occupied!
Design, soldering, filing and finishing and of course- granulation are all on the to do list today, so come along to Gilded Poppy Makery for a day full of laughs, great company, new friends and leave with a beautiful new skill to show friends and family.

I'm looking forward to seeing you there,

Cheers

Storm

INTERMEDIATE CLASS: You will need to be competent with your Jewellers saw, files, hammers and hand-held butane torch. As an Intermediate student, you should now be able to do basic soldering, and have a good understanding of the materials used regularly (silver, brass, bronze, copper).

+ More

What you will learn

  • So many things to learn today! Granulation is a hoot (and ridiculously addictive ;-) You'll find yourself looking for excuses to make more. Spare time on your hands? Let's make granules! Stressed out week? More granules! The real fun begins when you start to assemble them into a beautiful, uniquely designed ring that you've made yourself!

What you will get

  • You'll be with me from 10am to 6pm (unless you're all speedy and we finish up earlier!) so I'll have coffee and tea available for you at anytime, and when we break for lunch, there are a number of cafes and eateries nearby, or you can bring your own lunch if you prefer.

What to bring

  • Just yourself! A full kit of materials is included in your class fee, and tools will be provided.

What to wear

We are working with fire and really hot metal, so there are a few things that we have to do before we start. 1) Long hair must be tied back, with no stragglers. Headbands are great to keep it from falling forward of your face. 2) Clothes should be of natural materials: Cotton, bamboo, hemp, wool etc. Polyester and Nylon are made from plastic- and plastic melts if something hot lands on it! Sleeves need to be rolled back out of the way, and an apron tied over your clothes to stop anything loose from falling forward. T-shirt and jeans are a great choice, with a flannel shirt if it’s a bit chilly. (I will have an apron here to cover your clothes, so you don’t have to bring your own.) 3) Just like our bodies, our feet need protecting too. Tools are sharp, things are hot, and everything falls downwards if we fumble, so closed toe shoes are a must. Boots, sneakers- anything without gaps will do. 4) Personal jewellery should have as little ‘dangle’ as possible. Charm bracelets and chunky rings are gorgeous but get in the way, so are better left at home, or in your bag for the duration of the class.

Appropriate for

This is an intermediate class, available to those who are familiar with the jewellers torch, and hand tools.

I attended my first workshop at Gilded Poppy and was not disappointed. The construction of the granulated silver ring was complex but made relatively easy by the excellent teaching skills of Storm. The group was very welcoming and inclusive. It was a really enjoyable and productive session. Thank you
