Description

  • Skill Level 1 - Absolute Beginner: No previous sewing experience required

This class is perfect for teens who are interested in sewing and need to get some sewing practice under their belts before they set off to make their dream project.

In this one-day introduction to sewing class, teens will make a project from start to finish.

They will learn:

  • How to use a basic sewing pattern
  • How to layout fabric and place pattern pieces correctly.
  • How to thread and operate a sewing machine
  • How to sew a hem, stitch a seam and how to overcast the edge of the fabric to make a durable project.

At the end of the day each teen will leave with a cushion cover they have sewn (cushion insert is supplied).

Studio machines will be used during the day and project supplies are provided.

Just bring a water bottle and a packed lunch.

Want to Bring Your Own Sewing Machine?

Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer machines are welcome.
No mini, toy or handheld sewing machines are permitted - they are not suitable for this event.
If you're unsure, get in touch before booking.

Make sure the machine is in proper working order

  • If you’re not sure how to check, if it’s a second hand machine or it hasn’t been used in a few years, take it to a reputable sewing machine workshop, they may suggest it needs to be serviced
  • Avoid advertisers on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace, in my experience, they don’t do a good job and sometimes make the machine worse.
  • This avoids frustration in class due to a faulty machine.

Be sure to bring the power cord and foot control pedal & extra accessories

  • Bring the "bits & bobs" that come with your machine - such as extra presser feet, spare needles, etc
  • Make sure the power cord and foot control pedal are in good condition (i.e. no exposed wires) and are stored with the machine so they are not forgotten
  • If you have  the manual - bring it in case it's required.

Ensure there are 2-3 empty spare bobbins with the machine

  • These are essential to operating the sewing machine - some machines do not work with generic bobbins
  • if not, be sure to purchase the correct type - if you’re not sure make a note of your sewing machine brand and model (taking a photo is a good idea too) and visit a reputable sewing machine workshop near to you
