09 March 2018 • Rainforest Terrarium Making workshop in Northcote

Venue was nice and suitably peaceful. Presenter, food and terrarium materials were very good too. Not much option for a non alcoholic beverages drinker No scoops provided for participants to use for grabbing potting soil from one end of table to each potting areas. So you are left with using your hands to dig and carry soil and making a number of trips to the other end while making sure you don't drop any on the floor. The tranquility i had i imagined while making my terrarium was replaced by frantic trips to the materials area, jostling to get back to my area and to the restroom to wash my hands. I felt that i didn't get to spend more time actually making the terrarium. My time was spent more on these trips back and forth, the food, talking about the venue and the catering stuff.. maybe it is what a lot of people want but not for those like me who just want to zen out for the allocated 3 hours and immerse themselves in the process of terrarium making. I felt a bit rushed.

Although I had made terrariums before this class, I found myself picking up new tips- like what's a good amount of condensation, the value of washing your hands before and while assembling the terrarium, and how to treat mould. The highlight for me though was more to do with the atmosphere, community vibe and general joy of the class. The beautiful aesthetic of the studio and awesome feast also played a part!
